Overview

Low high-density lipoprotein (HDL) may be caused by familial (primary) or secondary conditions. Secondary causes of low HDL include physical inactivity, smoking, and diabetes mellitus.

Causes

Life Threatening Causes

Life-threatening causes include conditions which may result in death or permanent disability within 24 hours if left untreated.

There are no life threatening causes of low HDL.
