Overview

In patients presenting with heart failure, where the etiology of the cardiac dysfunction is unclear, cardiac MRI can be a useful imaging modality. It can be used to distinguish the area of inflammation, to help in the diagnosis of myocarditis, to evaluate patients with suspected infiltrative diseases, and to evaluate dilated cardiomyopathy in the setting of normal coronary arteries.

Cardiovasular Magnetic Resonance

  • Cardiac MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) appears to be not only helpful in the localization of inflammation and targeting of endomyocardial biopsy but also seems to be helpful in the diagnosis of myocarditis.[1]
  • This new technology may be helpful in reducing the percentage of idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy and discovering an etiology to the dilated cardiomyopathy in some of these patients.

CMR may be used for assessment of patients with LV dysfunction or hypertrophy or suspected forms of cardiac injury not related to ischemic heart disease. When the diagnosis is unclear, CMR may be considered to identify the etiology of cardiac dysfunction in patients presenting with heart failure, including
