Overview

There are no x-ray findings associated with horseshoe kidney,other than lower renal outline than normal kidneys. However, an x-ray may be helpful in the diagnosis of complications of horseshoe kidney, which include hydronephrosis due to obstruction and renal stones.

X Ray

There are no x-ray findings associated with horseshoe kidney, other than lower renal outline than normal kidneys and through visualization of the perinephric fat in association with an altered renal axis. However, an x-ray may be helpful in the diagnosis of complications of horseshoe kidney, which include:[1]

  • Hydronephrosis due to obstruction:
    • Renal enlargement
    • Cortical thinning
    • Rim sign
