Overview

First degree relatives of patients with bicuspid aortic valves should be screened using echocardiogram for its presence as there are evidence of familial clustering with autosomal dominant inheritance pattern.[1]

2008 ACC/AHA Guidelines for Screening of Bicuspid Aortic Valve[2]

Class I

1. Patient referral to a pediatric cardiologist experienced in fetal echocardiography is indicated in the second trimester of pregnancy to search for cardiac defects in the fetus. (Level of Evidence: C)

2. Echocardiographic screening for the presence of bicuspid aortic valve is recommended for first-degree relatives of patients with bicuspid aortic valve. (Level of Evidence: B)
