Thyroid nodules are growths of cells in the thyroid gland. These growths can be:
* Benign thyroid nodule cause:
* Not cancer (benign) or thyroid cancer
** Multinodular (sporadic) goiter ("colloid adenoma")
* Fluid-filled (cysts) or made up of thyroid gland cells
** Hashimoto's (chronic lymphocytic) thyroiditis
* One nodule or a group of small nodules
** Cysts (colloid, simple, or hemorrhagic)

** Follicular adenomas
Causes of thyroid nodules are not always found, but can include:
** Macrofollicular adenomas
* Hashimoto's disease
** Microfollicular or cellular adenomas
* Lack of iron in the diet
** Hürthle cell (oxyphil cell) adenomas
** Macro- or microfollicular patterns
* Malignant thyroid nodule causes:
** Papillary carcinoma
** Follicular carcinoma
** Minimally or widely invasive
** Oxyphilic (Hürthle cell) type
** Noninvasive follicular thyroid neoplasm with papillary-like nuclear features
** Medullary carcinoma
** Anaplastic carcinoma
** Primary thyroid lymphoma
** Metastatic carcinoma (breast, renal cell, others)
