Overview

Due to increasing antibiotic resistance and emerging organisms, it is important that the approaches to diagnosing pneumonia continue to be worked on. Currently, the host factors predisposing one to pneumonia are being studied in detail.[1] These include:

  1. Host susceptibility including age, genetic factors, exposures (such as cigarette smoke), chronic diseases and acute conditions allowing pneumonia to develop
  2. Host response to infection including immune resistance, vaccination response, and repair mechanisms
  3. Host consequences such as the development of complications and exacerbation of existing chronic conditions
