Overview
Symptoms
The symptoms of irritable bowel can be monitored over time to gauge response to therapy with many surveys available.[1]
The Birmingham IBS Symptom Questionnaire asks about 11 items over the last 4 weeks using the dimensions of pain, diarrhea, and constipation.[2]
IBS Symptom Severity Scale contains 9 items using likert, visual analogue slider, and drawing formats.[3] Using this scale, severity of symptoms are assigned by:
- <175, mild IBS;
- 175−300, moderate IBS;
- >300 severe IBS
In addition, a change of 50 points indicates significant improvement or worsening.
The Gastrointestinal Symptom Rating Scale has been modified for use in patients with IBS (GSRS-IBS) which has 13 items.[4]
The first three items from the Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ)-15 address IBS:[1]
- Stomach pain
- Constipation, loose bowels, or diarrhea
- Nausea, gas, or indigestion
