Overview
Other imaging options are useful in determining the anatomy and how well a patient will respond to therapy.
Other Imaging Findings
Nuclear gastric emptying studies/gastric emptying scintigraphy
- Nuclear gastric emptying studies can help in the diagnosis of rapid gastric emptying.[1][2][3][4]
- It can also help assess a patient's response to therapy
- Nuclear gastric emptying studies are also known as gastric emptying scintigraphy.
Barium study/upper GI series
- A bland meal is given containing a small amount of radioactive material[5]
- The radioactive isotope is measured by x-ray every hour for 4 hours after eating
- May be helpful in documenting rapid gastric emptying
- Could help in ascertaining the anatomy
- This test has a low sensitivity and specificity
Upper endoscopy
- A fiber-optic camera is passed down to the stomach while the patient is under anesthesia[6]
- The purpose for this is to exclude other disease processes and identify abnormalities with motility
- May be helpful in ascertaining the anatomy
- This could help rule out an ulcer which may also lead to rapid gastric emptying
