Overview

Other imaging options are useful in determining the anatomy and how well a patient will respond to therapy.

Other Imaging Findings

Nuclear gastric emptying studies/gastric emptying scintigraphy

  • Nuclear gastric emptying studies can help in the diagnosis of rapid gastric emptying.[1][2][3][4]
  • It can also help assess a patient's response to therapy
  • Nuclear gastric emptying studies are also known as gastric emptying scintigraphy.

Barium study/upper GI series

  • A bland meal is given containing a small amount of radioactive material[5]
  • The radioactive isotope is measured by x-ray every hour for 4 hours after eating
  • May be helpful in documenting rapid gastric emptying
  • Could help in ascertaining the anatomy
  • This test has a low sensitivity and specificity

Upper endoscopy

  • The purpose for this is to exclude other disease processes and identify abnormalities with motility
  • May be helpful in ascertaining the anatomy
  • This could help rule out an ulcer which may also lead to rapid gastric emptying
