- Tachypneic: Many fatal cases presented with tachypnea and no survivors had tachypnea
- Hypotension (less than 90 mm Hg systolic /60 mm Hg diastolic)

- Mucosal redness of the oral cavity
- Bleeding gums

- Tachypnea (has shown to be the most significant criteria discriminating fatal and nonfatal outcomes)
