Overview

Women are subjected to increased financial burden to treat underlying abnormal uterine bleeding. Annually, they loose USD $2,000.00 on account of work absences. Hormonal medications range from USD $172.00 for contraceptive pills, USD $930.00 for levonorgestrel IUD and upwards of USD $30,000.00 for hysterectomies.

Cost-effectiveness of Therapy

Cost related to the treatment of abnormal uterine bleeding depends on the underlying cause. Studies show that women in the United States have lost more than USD $2,000.00 annually due cyclical pain and resultant work absences. The annual cost of fibroids was calculated to be USD $4.1-$9.4 billion.[1]

Treatment Costs for Dysfunctional Uterine Bleeding
Treatment modality Cost-effectiveness
Contraceptive Pill[2] USD $172.00
Levonorgestrel IUD[3] USD $930.00; Copper-T IUD is a cheaper IUD but would exacerbate vaginal bleeding and is not recommended (USD $647.00)
Abdominal Hysterectomy[4] USD $43,622.00; costs vary depending on operative time, and length of stay
Vaginal Hysterectomy[4] USD $31,934.00; costs vary depending on operative time, and length of stay
Laparoscopic Hysterectomy[4] USD $38,312.00; costs vary depending on operative time, and length of stay
Robotic Hysterectomy[4] USD $49,526.00; costs vary depending on operative time, and length of stay
