Overview
Classification
Shigella species are classified by four serogroups:
- Serogroup A: S. dysenteriae (12 serotypes)
- Serogroup B: S. flexneri (6 serotypes)
- Serogroup C: S. boydii (23 serotypes)
- Serogroup D: S. sonnei (1 serotype)
Shigella boydii is a Gram-negative bacteria of the genus Shigella. Like other member of the genus, S. boydii is a non-motile, non-sporeforming, rod-shaped bacteria which can cause dysentery in humans through fecal-oral contamination.[1]
S. boydii is the most genetically-divergent of the Shigella genus.[2]
Group A–C are physiologically similar; S. sonnei (group D) can be differentiated on the basis of biochemical metabolism assays.[3]
