Overview

Congenital rubella syndrome is caused by rubella virus which is a single stranded RNA toga virus.

Causes

Congenital rubella syndrome is caused by maternal-fetal transmission of rubella virus. It belongs to the family Togaviridae. It is spherical in structure, covered by a lipid membrane derived from the host cell membrane. There are prominent spikes (projections) composed of the viral envelope proteins E1 and E2 embedded in the membrane. This envelope encloses a positive single stranded RNA.
