Overview

There is no screening test for congenital rubella syndrome.

Screening

There is no screening test for congenital rubella syndrome. However, if there is a high clinical suspicion of rubella infection during pregnancy, serum IgG and IgM antibodies against rubella may be ordered. Also, if a pregnant woman proves to be unimmune to rubella, vaccination with MMR should be deferred till after delivery due to the theoretical teratogenic effects of the rubella vaccine.
