Overview

U wave alternans is defined as beat to beat variation in the amplitude or axis of the U wave.

Classification

U wave alternans is one of several types of repolarization alternans which also includes ST segment alternans and T wave alternans.

Pathophysiology

The underlying molecular mechanism is thought to involve abnormalities in calcium handling.

Causes

U wave alternans is very rare.

Natural History, Complications, Prognosis

U wave alternans has been associated with an increased susceptibility to ventricular arrhythmias.[2][3]

Treatment

Repletion of magnesium and calcium reversed the electrocardiographic abnormality and reduced ventricular irritability. [4]
