Overview

Primary prevention of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD) refers to preventing the initial development of the disease before its first clinical presentation. There is currently no established method for preventing NMOSD onset.[1]

Primary Prevention

There are no established measures for the primary prevention of neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder.[1]

  • Vaccination: No disease-specific vaccine is established for preventing NMOSD onset.[1]
  • Preventive medication: No medication regimen is established for preventing NMOSD in individuals who have not developed the disease.[1]
  • Risk-factor modification: The Neuromyelitis Optica Study Group (NEMOS) recommendations describe vitamin D deficiency and smoking as less well-established potential risk factors. These associations do not establish that vitamin D supplementation or smoking cessation prevents a first NMOSD attack.[2]
