Overview
In some patients with sickle cell anemia, MRI may be needed to assess for particular conditions, such as osteomyelitis.
MRI
MRI can show avascular necrosis of the leg.[1] MRI is the best test for osteomyelitis and can also show marrow hyperplasia. T1- and T2-weighted MRI images can show the abnormalities. Osteomyelitis in sickle cell disease is commonly due to Salmonella.
