* There are no established criteria for the diagnosis of pyonephrosis.
* Pyonephrosis should be suspected if the patient develops [[fever]], [[chills]], [[flank pain]] or back pain in addition to symptoms of [[Urinary tract infection (UTI)|urinary tract infection]] such as [[dysuria]], [[Urinary urgency|urgency]], frequency.

Diagnostic criteria

  • There are no established criteria for the diagnosis of pyonephrosis.
  • Pyonephrosis should be suspected if the patient develops fever, chills, flank pain or back pain in addition to symptoms of urinary tract infection such as dysuria, urgency, frequency.
  • Ultrasound can be used in the emergency setting and can rapidly establish or exclude the diagnosis of pyonephrosis.[1][2]
