Overview
A detailed history must be taken from every person presenting with diabetes symptoms. Classic symptoms of diabetes include: weight loss, polyphagia, polydipsia and polyuria. less common symptoms include vision changes, tingling or numbness in exterimities, fatigue and skin changes.
History
A detailed and thorough history from the patient is necessary. Specific areas of focus when obtaining a history from the patient include:
- Dietary habitus
- Weight change
- Family history of hyperglycemia or diabetes
- Pregnancies complicated by hyperglycemia
Symptoms
Common symptoms
- Polyuria
- Polydipsia
- Unexplained weight loss
- Polyphagia
Less common symptoms
- Vision changes
- Paresthesia
- Fatigue
- Skin changes
- Poor wound healing
