Overview

Historical Perspective

Discovery

  • The term Atopic dermatitis was first coined by Fred Wise and Marion Sulzberger, American dermatologists, in 1933.[1]
  • The association between heritable hypersensitivity to allergens in patients with asthma and hay fever, and Atopic dermatitis was made in 1923 by Arthur Coca and Robert Cooke. In 1933, Wise and Sulzberger, enhanced Arthur Coca and Robert Cooke's concept to include the description of Atopic dermatitis.[2][3][4][5][6][7][1]
  • One of the very first traces of relationship between allergies and genetic factors were described by Hippocrates.[8]
  • In 1816, Robert Willan and Thomas Bateman described a disease “Porrigo larvalis” which is identified as one of the earliest descriptions of Atopic Dermatitis.[6]
