Laboratory Findings
- Serology
- It is useful in later phase of the disease
- It is more sensitive at 2-8 weeks from cough
- It is used in confirming diagnosis in outbreaks.
- For most adults and adolescents, who often do not seek medical care until several weeks into their illness, serology is often used to determine whether antibody against pertussis toxin or another component of B. pertussis is present at high levels in the blood of the patient.
- Culture
- Nasopharyngeal specimen are inoculated directly on to transport media and within 24 hours on to culture media (Bordet-Gengou medium)
- The bacteria can be recovered from the patient only during the first three weeks of illness, rendering culturing useless after this period
