Overview
Diagnosis of spinal tuberculosis requires a combination of clinical features with presence of confirmatory findings on imaging studies. Establishing the etiology requires the demonstration of acid fast bacilli on microscopy or a postive culture of a biopsy for mycobacterium tuberculosis or PCR of the organism.
Laboratory Findings
- Blood tests:
- CBC: leukocytosis[1]
- Elevated erythrocyte sedimentation rate >100 mm/h
- Tuberculin skin test:
- Tuberculin skin test (purified protein derivative PPD) results are positive in 84-95% of patients with Pott's disease who are not infected with HIV.
- CT guided Bone biopsy
