Overview
What are the symptoms of cerebral venous sinus thrombosis ?
The most common symptoms of cerebral venous thrombosis are
- headache, subacute in nature ,developing over several days. Acute headaches also can happen.
- focal or generalized seizure
- focal neurological deficits presenting as monoparesis or hemiparesis
- coma in 10% of patients as the presenting symptom
What causes cerebral venous sinus thrombosis?
- multiple pregnancies,
- untreated inflammatory conditions
- infections and injuries of the central nervous system
- oestrogen therapy/oral contraceptives,
- thrombophilia (especially antithrombin deficiency, protein C and S deficiency and factor V Leiden mutation),
- head trauma,
- local infections
- underlying cancer
Who is at highest risk?
- surgery
- trauma
- cancer
- exogenous hormones
- genetic risks (inherited thrombophilia)
Diagnosis
- No specific confirmatory laboratory test - Elevated D-dimer level is supportive to diagnose cerebral venous sinus thrombosis(CVT)but normal D-dimer level doesn't exclude CVT
