Overview
In general, blepharitis is diagnosed based on clinical features alone. Cultures and biopsy of the eyelid margins may be indicated for patients who have recurrent anterior blepharitis with severe inflammation, as well as for patients who are not responding to therapy.[1][2]
Laboratory Findings
In general, blepharitis is diagnosed based on clinical features alone. Laboratory studies for blepharitis should include the following:[1][2][3][4][5]
- Cultures of the eyelid margins may be indicated for:
- Recurrent anterior blepharitis with severe inflammation
- Not responding to therapy
- A biopsy of the eyelid may be indicated for
- Unifocal recurrent chalazia
- Microscopic evaluation of eyelashes may be indicated for:
- Chronic blepharoconjunctivitis (may reveal Demodex mites)
