Tom graduated with a B.S. in Biology and Chemistry in 1985 from Union College, Schenectady, NY. In 1993, he obtained his M.D./PhD under a scholarship from the Medical Scientist Training Program at Northwestern University Medical School after completing his PhD thesis in developmental cellular neurobiology. He went on to do a residency in Pediatrics at Boston Medical Center, and obtained board certification in General Pediatrics, which he continues to practice on a part-time basis. In 1995, he began residency and fellowship training in Neurology and Child Neurology through the Harvard-Longwood Neurology Training Program and the Boston Children’s Hospital Child Neurology Training Program under the mentorship of Dr. Joseph Volpe, Bronson Crothers Chair of Neurology. He received board certification in Neurology, with a special qualification in Child Neurology in 2009, and went on to do a fellowship in behavioral neurology and neuropharmacology at Childrens Hospital, under the tutelage of Dr. David Urion. A recipient of the NIH’s 5 year Neurological Science Academic Development Award (NSADA), he participated in the program for effectiveness in clinical research through the Havard School of Public Health and spent 5 years doing clinical research in the areas of attention deficit disorder, sleep disorders, and functional neuroimaging. After completing the NSADA program, Tom joined Neurometrix, Inc. to build the clinical research group. There he provided leadership in product development and clinical research and provided an academic style emphasis on clinical research and publication. In May of 2007, he joined EPIX Pharmaceuticals, Inc. where he built up a world class clinical research team and instituted practices and procedures that aimed at insuring the execution of the highest quality clinical research across the company’s broad clinical programs in Alzheimer’s disease, schizophrenia, pulmonary hypertension and obesity. In December of 2009, Tom joined DepuySynthes, a Johnson and Johnson Company, reporting to Sean Lilienfeld, where he initially worked in both Codman and Mitek as Medical Director overseeing all aspects of pre-market clinical and medial strategy. The following year, he took on responsibility for Medical Affairs, Clinical Operations and Clinical Research for all of Codman. In 2013, Tom was promoted to Vice President for Strategic Medical Affairs and Sciences for the Neuroscience Businesses of DepuySynthes, Johnson & Johnson,where he fostered development of the clinical research and evidence generation strategy for the CodmanNeuro Franchise. He was instrumental in helping to develop a first-in-class patient centric safety initiative for the medical device sector. This past Spring, Tom joined the Clinical Development team at Avanir Pharmaceuticals as Vice President, leading programs in the therapeutic areas of Alzheimer’s Disease, schizophrenia, and other neurodegenerative disorders. Throughout his career in clinical research, Tom has maintained a steadfast and dedicated practice in child neurology, with a focus on behavioral neurology, spending an average of 1 day per week in his clinic for the Neurology Foundation of Boston Children’s Hospital.

Tom is a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics and a longtime member of the American Academy of Neurology, Child Neurology Society, American Academy of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, American Medical Association, and Massachusetts Medical Society. The co-author of many scientific papers and abstracts in neurology, Tom was also a medical editor for EBSCO publishing and has presented at many meetings on Alzheimer’s Disease, Attention Deficit Disorders, Gil de la Tourette Syndrome and Autism.
