Overview

Coronary artery stent infection is a rare complication of intracoronary stent placement.

Pathophysiology

The incubation period is less than one month. Most often the infection is due to staphylococcus aureus.

Epidemiology and Demographics

Coronary artery stent infection has occured in approximately 2 dozen cases as of 2012.

Risk Factors

The risk may be greater for drug eluting stents.

Natural History, Complications, Prognosis

The condition is associated with serious morbidity and a high mortality

Treatment

Medical and potentially surgical therapy is required.
