The sense of having "a skipped heart beat" can be due to either a premature atrial contraction (an early beat of the upper chamber of the heart) or a premature ventricular contraction (an early beat of the lower ventricular chamber of the heart). It can also be associated with atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter.
