Overview

Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) is used to diagnose as well as treat the fistula with placement of pancreatic stent during the procedure. ERCP demonstrate filling of the pancreatic duct with contrast and extravasation of the contrast suggesting disruption of the pancreatic duct.

ERCP

A pancreatic fistula can be directly visualized via Endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). ERCP can be used for diagnosis as well as therapeutic purposes and is the test of choice for the placement of therapeutic pancreatic stent during the procedure to facilitate the closure of pancreatic fistula. ERCP has a higher sensitivity and specificity compared to other imaging modalities to detect the pancreatic duct leak. Pancreatic duct filling with contrast and extravasation of the contrast are findings suggestive of the pancreatic fistula caused by the disruption of the pancreatic duct.[1]
