G-banding is the treatment of chromosomes in the metaphase stage with trypsin (to partially digest the protein) and stain them with Giemsa. Dark bands that take up the stain are strongly A,T rich (gene poor). Chromosomes have distinct banding patterns referred to as a G-band. The reverse of G-bands is obtained in R-banding.
