Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute
The Australian Regenerative Medicine Institute (ARMI) is a $138 million dollar medical research centre which will open in 2008. It will be based at Monash University, with its foundation director to be Professor Nadia Rosenthal.[1] Rosenthal has previously served at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory and Harvard Medical School. While at Harvard, she was part of the team that discovered the insulin gene.[2]
When it opens, it will be one of the world's largest regenerative medicine and stem cell research hubs.[3] Its research aims to restore and regenerate damaged tissue and organs by injecting or implanting cells to allow the human body to heal and recover. It will focus on developing effective treatments for a range of currently incurable diseases, such as cancer, arthritis and other musculoskeletal conditions, diabetes and cardiovascular diseases.
