Patients with Paget's disease of the breast have many treatment options. The selection depends on the stage of the tumor. The options are surgery, radiation therapy, or a combination of these methods. Before treatment starts, ask your health care team about possible side effects and how treatment may change your normal activities. Because cancer treatments often damage healthy cells and tissues, side effects are common. Side effects may not be the same for each person, and they may change from one treatment session to the next.
Surgery is the mainstay of treatment for Paget's disease of the breast.

Overview

Surgery is the mainstay of treatment for Paget's disease of the breast.

Surgery

The indication of surgery depends on the stage of the cancer and the patient's general health:[1]

  • Mastectomy has been regarded for a long time as a standard therapy.
  • Recently, conservative treatment, which involves the complete resection of the nipple-areola complex followed by radiation therapy, proved to be an alternative approach in patients with cancer confined to the central quadrant of the breast.
  • Paget’s disease associated with DCIS or invasive breast cancer treatment should include complete resection of the underlying disease with excision of the nipple-areola complex and radiation therapy of the remaining breast tissue.
