Overview

The diverticulum history itself goes back to 1700s when Dr. Lavater described the diverticulum and in 1812 Dr. Meckel gave a full description on it. In 1700s Dr. Littre was the first to describe diverticular diseases.

Historical Perspective

  • In 1589, Dr. Hildanus was the first physician to discover the lesion in the colon.[1]
  • In the 1700s, Alexis Littre was the first to describe diverticular diseases, where he reported "diverticular hernia" without explaining it.[2]
  • In 1812, Dr. Meckel was believed to be the first physician to describe the diverticulum but forty years before him, Dr. Lavater described the diverticulum.
  • In 1902, Dr. Deetz gave a full description on the diverticulum.
