Overview

Although reestablishing biliary drainage is the mainstay of treatment, antibiotics play an important role in the management of cholangitis.

Primary Prevention

  • Treatment of gallstones, tumors, and infestations of parasites may reduce the risk for some people.
    • A metal or plastic stents within the bile system may be needed to prevent recurrence.
  • Patients with compromised biliary systems that are prone to develop recurrent cholangitis may benefit from antibiotic maintenance therapy, given daily in lower-than-therapeutic dosages.[1]
