Overview

According to World Health Organization, bone tumors can be divided into primary and secondary tumors. Primitive bone tumors are classified using histo-genetic criteria and malignancy anatomic-clinical criteria.[1][2]

Classification

The table below summarizes the classification of bone and cartilage tumors according to tumor origin and location.[3][4]

Location Origin Type of tumor
Diaphysis Myeloid Multiple myeloma
Epithelial Adamantinoma
PNET/Ewing family Ewing's sarcoma
Metaphysis Osteoblast Osteoid osteoma
Osteoblastoma
Osteoma/osteosarcoma
Chondroblast Chondroma/ecchondroma/enchondroma
Enchondromatosis
Chondrosarcoma
Osteochondroma
Chondromyxoid fibroma
Fibrous Ossifying fibroma
Fibrosarcoma
Epiphysis Chondroblast Chondroblastoma
Myeloid Giant-cell tumor of bone
Other/ungrouped Notochord Chordoma
