Other Diagnostic Studies

There is no routinely diagnositic studies for atopic dermatitis, but in selected patients,to rule out other skin conditions, histology examination of a skin biopsy and other laboratory tests can be considered.[1]

  • Serum IgE level
  • Scraping - for tinea corporis
  • Tzanck smear and swab for viral polymerase chain reaction - eczema herpeticum
  • Swab, gram stain and antibiotic sensitivity - Staphylococcus
  • Complete blood cell count
    • thrombocytopenia (Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome)
    • peripheral eosinophilia
  • Potassium hydroxide (KOH)- dermatophytes
