Risk Factors

Despite sharing some risk factors, the two types of epidural abscesses have some particularities:

Intracranial Epidural Abscess

• Sinusitis, otitis, mastoiditis
• Trauma
• Neurosurgical procedures
• Exposure to expanded polytetrafluethylene
• Scalp venous catheters in infants

Spinal Epidural Abscess

• Diabetes mellitus

• Alcoholism

• HIV infection

• Trauma

• Tattooing
• Acupuncture

• Continuous bone infection

• Continuous soft tissue infection

• Bacteremia

• IV drug abuse
