Overview

The majority of patients with the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease are asymptomatic. However, very rarely patients may complain of fatigue, malaise and dull right upper quadrant abdominal discomfort. Mild jaundice can also be noticed. Often following an asymptomatic course, the disease may present first with cirrhosis and/or the complication of portal hypertension.

History

There is no significant history associated in patients with the non-alcoholic fatty liver disease. However, history of alcohol consumption and family history of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease must be obtained.

Symptoms

Usually, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease presents with no or few symptoms and sighs but when it does it shows the following

• Hepatomegaly
• Fatigue
• Ascites
• Gynecomastia ( due to decreased estrogen clearance by liver damage )
• Right upper quadrant abdominal pain
• Jaundice
• Splenomegaly
• Most of the time its an incidental diagnosis or the disease may present first with cirrhosis and/or the complication of portal hypertension.
