Overview

Laboratory findings consistent with the diagnosis of Kaposi's sarcoma include decreased hemoglobin level, positive HIV tests, and positive HHV-8 antigen on immunohistochemistry.

Laboratory Findings

Laboratory findings consistent with the diagnosis of kaposi's sarcoma include:

Complete blood count

• Decreased hemoglobin level

Electrophoresis

• Detect antibodies against Kaposi sarcoma herpes virus (KSHV) (also known as HHV-8)

ELISA

• Screens for HIV infection among Kaposi's sarcoma patients

Western Blot

• Confirms HIV infection among Kaposi's sarcoma patients

Immunohistochemistry

• Kaposi's sarcoma cells are typically CD34, HHV-8, LANA-1, and D2-40 positive. CD31 and CD34 testing may be useful to assess for vascular origin.
