Hyperkinesia, in medicine, refers to an abnormal increase in muscular activity.

The opposite of Hyperkinesia is known as "Hypokinesia".

Hyperkinesia is separated into 2 types: Rhythmic and Nonrhythmic. Rhythmic disorders consist of mainly tremours. Nonrhythmic disorders are mostly involuntary muscle contractions. One example of a nonrhythmic hyperkinesia disorder is tics.

Etiology

The word Hyperkinesia comes from the Greek hyper, meaning increased, and kinein, meaning to move.
