Geranylgeranyl pyrophosphate is an intermediate in the HMG-CoA reductase pathway used by organisms in the biosynthesis of terpenes and terpenoids. In plants it is additionally the precursor to carotenoids, gibberellins, tocopherols, and chlorophyls.
