Causes
Most often, central sleep apnea is idiopathic. Secondary sleep apnea can be caused by other conditions such as:
- Heart failure[1]
- Stroke[2]
- Drug induced (opioids)
- Continuous positive airway pressure - Some people with obstructive sleep apnea develop central sleep apnea while on treatment with continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) due to decreased respiratory drive. [3]
