Overview
The most common symptoms of carotid body tumor include neck mass, neck pain or headache. Other symptoms may also be present depending on the invasion of tumor to the neighboring structures.
History and Symptoms
- Most of the carotid body tumors are asymptomatic.[1]
- when symptomatic, common symptoms of carotid body tumor include neck mass, headache or neck pain which may be present in 35% of the cases.

- Symptoms of carotid body tumor may include the following:[2]
- In case of tumors with greater extension symptoms may include:[3]
- Hoarseness due to vagus or laryngeal nerve involvement
- Involvement of hypoglossal which may present as atrophy and weakness of the tongue
- Involvement of glossopharyngeal nerve
- Syncope due to possible compression of the carotid sinus or internal carotid artery
- Stridor due to airway obstruction
- Dysphagia due to extension into the parapharyngeal space
- Symptoms that may suggest the metastatic activity of the tumor include:

- Bilateral neck involvement may result in carotid sinus syndrome.[5]
