Overview

The hallmark of sacrococcygeal teratoma is a protruding mass at the sacrococcygeal region. It is important to obtain the history about the onset, and the progression of the symptoms. Most common symptoms of sacrococcygeal teratoma are due to compression caused by the large tumor mass.

History and Symptoms

Symptoms of sacrococcygeal teratoma depend on the size of the tumor. [1]

Common Symptoms

  • Small sacrococcygeal teratomas are asymptomatic.
  • Mass over the sacrococcygeal region.[2]
  • Dystocia[3]
  • Maternal symptoms may include:
    • Hypertension[4]
    • Peripheral edema
    • Vomiting

Less Common Symptoms

  • Purulent vaginal discharge[5]
  • Recurrent vaginal mass
  • Abdominal distension[6]

Symptoms in Adults

  • Lower back pain[7]
  • Weakness
  • Constipation
  • Increased frequency of urine and stool
  • Tingling and numbness in the lower limbs
