Overview

Several factors increase the risk of developing hirsutism and an accurate history would aid in accurately identifying the risk.

Risk Factors

The following factors may increase the risk of hirsutism:

• Genetics, some conditions that cause hirsutism may be inherited. Conditions that cause hirsutism run in families, such as congenital adrenal hyperplasia and polycystic ovary syndrome.
• Race and ethnicity ; Women of European, Meditarranean, Middle-Eastern and South Asian ancestry are more likely to develop the condition.
• Obesity: This causes increased androgen production, which can worsen hirsutism.
