Overview

MRI

  • MRI may be helpful in the diagnosis of Budd Chiari.
  • Findings on MRI suggestive of BCS include the following:
    • Hepatic vein thrombosis
    • Spontaneous intrahepatic anastomoses
    • Ascites
    • Thrombosis of the IVC by an enlarged caudate lobe or external compression of the IVC by an enlarged caudate lobe
    • Prominent azygos and hemiazygos veins
    • Hepatomegaly and enlarged caudate lobe
    • Inhomogeneous or Homogeneous signal intensity of hepatic parenchyma on T1- and T2-weighted MRI scans.
