• Acute cholecystitis
• Chronic cholecystitis

Cholecystitis can be classified based upon the cause as as:

• Calculous cholecystitis (58%)
• Acalculous cholecystitis (42%)

Other types are:

• Xanthogranulomatous cholecystitis
• Emphysematous cholecystitis
• Eosinophilic and lymphoeosinophilic cholecystitis.
