The American Diabetes Association, or the ADA, is an American health organization providing diabetes research, information and advocacy. Founded in 1940, the American Diabetes Association conducts programs in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, reaching hundreds of communities.

The mission of the Association is to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.

To fulfill this mission, the American Diabetes Association funds research, publishes scientific findings, provides information and other services to people with diabetes, their families, health professionals and the public. The Association is also actively involved in advocating for scientific research and for the rights of people with diabetes.

Diabetes Statistics

  • 20.8 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes. One-third of them do not know it.
  • Approximately 41 million Americans have pre-diabetes.
  • 61% -- The increase of Americans with diabetes since 1990.
  • 1.5 million -- The number of new cases of diabetes diagnosed in people age 20 years or older in 2005.

Evidence Grading System

ADA has developed a grading system for leveling the standards of medical care in diabetes.

Level of evidence Desciption
A Clear evidence from well-conducted, generalizable randomized controlled trials

that are adequately powered, including

  • Evidence from a well-conducted multicenter trial
  • Evidence from a meta-analysis that incorporated quality ratings in the analysis

Compelling nonexperimental evidence, i.e., “all or none” rule developed by the

Centre for Evidence-Based Medicine at the University of Oxford

Supportive evidence from well-conducted randomized controlled trials that are

adequately powered, including

  • Evidence from a well-conducted trial at one or more institutions
  • Evidence from a meta-analysis that incorporated quality ratings in the analysis
B Supportive evidence from well-conducted cohort studies
  • Evidence from a well-conducted prospective cohort study or registry
  • Evidence from a well-conducted meta-analysis of cohort studies

Supportive evidence from a well-conducted case-control study

C Supportive evidence from poorly controlled or uncontrolled studies
  • Evidence from randomized clinical trials with one or more major or three or more minor methodological flaws that could invalidate the results
  • Evidence from observational studies with high potential for bias (such as case series with comparison with historical controls)
  • Evidence from case series or case reports
