Historical Perspective
- Mumps may have first been described by Hippocrates as a disease causing parotitis and orchitis in the 5th century.[1]
- Vaccination for mumps in the United States began in 1967.
- Prior to the vaccination program, approximately 186,000 cases were reported each year.
- Since the start of the program, there has been an approximate 99% decrease in mumps.
- In 2006, an outbreak occurred affecting 6,584 people in the United States, predominately on college campuses.
- In 2009, another outbreak occurred in the Northeast of the United States among religious communities, affecting over 3,000 people.[2]
