Candidiasis_05.jpeg(700 × 460 pixels, file size: 64 KB, MIME type: image/jpeg)

Initially filled with a selective growth medium containing thistle seed extract, extracted from the seeds of the Guizotia abyssinica plant, each of these three glass test tube containers were inoculated with a fungal organism. The outer two tubes were each inoculated with Cryptococcus neoformans organisms, while the central tube was inoculated with Candida albicans organisms. This selective growth medium gave rise to colonies, the outer two tubes producing a brown pigment, identifying them as C. neoformans, and the middle colony produced no pigment, hence remaining white.
