Overview
Overview
Lymphangitis is an inflammation of the lymphatic channels following infectious causes such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites with streptococcus pyogenes being the most common cause.  It can also occur in the setting of noninfectious causes like congenital or development abnormalities, surgical procedures, malignancy, radiation, and trauma.
The etiology varies depending on the clinical form of Lymphangitis.

Life Threatening Causes
Life-threatening causes include conditions which may result in death or permanent disability within 24 hours if left untreated.  Lymphangitis most often is a sign of a worsening skin infection and may suggest the spreading of the causative organism into the blood, thus it must be treated as such irrespective of the causes.
